چکیده

Introduction Even with the technological development of infusion pumps, pediatric intensive care nurses are resistant to administer red blood cells (RBC) by linear peristaltic infusion pumps due to the supposed risk of cells damage, despite the need of accuracy in low flow rates. Patient safety can be compromised both by RBC quality decrease due to the pumping mechanism, as well as, by possible flow rate problems during the administration.

In-Vitro Red Blood Cells Integrity and Morphology Changes after Passing Through Volumetric Peristaltic Infusion Pump

Background: It is not clear whether the use of volumetric peristaltic infusion pumps, affect the quality of the erythrocytes during packed cell transfusion or not. In the present study in vitro quality of red blood cells was assessed after using this type of infusion pumps in a prospective study. Materials and Methods: In this study 60 units of packed red cells were examined before and after p...

Peristaltic infusion of red blood cells: analysis of hemolysis ratio, plasma hemoglobin and potassium levels

Introduction It is unclear whether the use of linear peristaltic infusion pumps with different propulsion mechanisms can affect the quality of red blood cells (RBCs) transfusion. We hypothesized that the mechanism of liquid propulsion, infusion rate, complete or incomplete compression of the infusion sets segment and type of pumping segment composition materials are variables that can influence...

An Observational Study of Errors Related to the Preparation and Administration of Medications Given by Infusion Devices in a Teaching Hospital

Since there is no detailed hospital based incident reporting system, this study was designed to evaluate the medication errors associated with infusion pumps in intensive care unit (ICU). The investigation was conducted in a Teaching hospital in the form of a prospective, observational study. A sample size of 43 doses administered to ICU patients was chosen to enable reliable estimate of error ...
